The birth of a baby is a life-changing event for a woman and her partner. Women need good care and a safe environment in which to give birth, but their needs extend beyond this. They also need consistent and continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement, and respect.

A birth doula can give the individualized care that addresses these non-medical needs. The doula's presence supplements the support that a woman's partner and family provide; it can help reduce the need for medical interventions.
